Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd, a leading mobile phone and telecommunication provider, announced today that due to popular demand it has released a Wi-Fi enabled version of the successful Samsung Star mobile phone in the region.
Increasingly cell phones are being used to provide Internet connectivity; mobile phones that were once used simply to make phone calls have evolved into jack-of-all-trade devices. Feedback from consumers in the region showed that while the Samsung Star was proving a popular choice as a mid-range touch phone, users also wanted the phone to be able to browse the internet and provide them constant and instant connectivity.

According to research Wi-Fi handset shipments are set to double between 2008 and 2010. With the latter date fast approaching, ABI Research analysts have confirmed that a similar pattern will hold true – or even accelerate – for the period 2009-2011. This year is on track to see 144 million handsets shipped, with forecasts for 2011 at just over 300 million.
Mr. Sandeep Saihgal, General Manager, Mobile Phone Division, Samsung Gulf Electronics: “With the uptake of mobile Internet services growing rapidly, we’re increasingly seeing that it isn’t just business people who are utilising mobile internet. The rise in mobile social networking and cloud computing means that being connected to the internet via your mobile is a must have feature for everyone. After listening to initial feedback from consumers in the region we have decided to release a Wi-Fi enabled version of the Samsung Star”
“The popular Star is the fastest model in Samsung’s history to reach the milestone. The Samsung Star is proving to be one of our most popular touch phones for 2009. The phone reached new sales mark in just 4 months, faster than any previous Samsung mobile. Its competitive pricing and innovative features mean that it is a perfect entry level smartphone for consumers to purchase.” Saighal continued.
Just recently, Samsung announced that sales of the Star, its hugely popular touch screen mobile phone, surpassed the 5-million mark this month. The Star (model number S5233), launched in May, is the fastest model in Samsung’s history to reach the milestone. More than 700,000 units of the Star were sold in May and more than 900,000 in July globally. Monthly sales in August and September were 1.6 million and 1.8 million, respectively. Based on the current trend, Samsung projects total cumulative sales to reach 10 million globally by November.
In an ultra thin case of merely 11.9 mm and 3-inch WQVGA touch screen, the Star WiFi is an affordable mobile phone that appeals to young consumers. It also boasts high-tech features such as Samsung’s exclusive high-quality sound technology, Embedded Stylus, for ease of use and convenience when browsing the net, DNSe, as well as a SmileShot-enabled camera and Bluetooth v2.1. The Star’s global success can be attributed in part to its sleek design, interactive and user-friendly UI, and its reasonable price point.
The phone boasts 3-inch display screen and Samsung’s TouchWiz 1.0 touch technology that makes using the phone easy and more enjoyable. The featured Online Widgets also allow a more convenient and unlimited access to the Internet; users can blog or upload their photos on the move or even enjoy their MySpace and Facebook societies on the go. The Widgets are also available for every day’s usability including access to the weather forecasts, Google search, sports news and new game downloads.
“The demand for feature packed smartphone is on the rise; however amidst the current economic turmoil the consumer is also looking at mobile phones with added value. Our customers are not willing to compromise price for technology and with Samsung Star WiFi, you get the latest offerings in technology at a competitive price,” commented Saihgal.
Using “Photo Contact,” users can call a contact by simply touching an appointed image. Users will enjoy the full touch screen when navigating the mobile. Access is more intuitive than ever, allowing people to tap, drag and flick their way through the mobile’s features. Haptic feedback adds a sensory dimension, helping users know when their touch input is being received.
Samsung Star WiFi is available at all major electronics outlets and is retailed at AED 799, and is available in black, white, Pink and Silver.
