Google says Apple exec rejected app for iPhone

Author: Doncrack // Category:
.
Google Inc. said Apple Inc.'s top marketing executive personally told the company that its Google Voice application had been rejected because it duplicates the telephone dialer on the iPhone and could be used as a replacement.

The newly disclosed discussion, revealed in a regulatory filing made fully public Friday, contrasts with Apple's own denial that it rejected the program. Apple said Friday that the two Silicon Valley companies are still discussing the application.

The Federal Communications Commission is looking at Apple's block on the Google Voice app as part of a bigger investigation into how wireless industry practices affect consumers. In August, Apple, Google and Dallas-based AT&T Inc., the only wireless carrier to offer the iPhone in the U.S., sent the commission letters responding to its questions.

The specifics of the talks between Apple and Google were redacted from Google's original letter. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company allowed the FCC to post an unredacted version Friday "in the interest of transparency," according to a blog post.

Google Voice lets people pick a new phone number, then route incoming calls to cell, office or home phones. It also lets users place calls, including international calls at low rates, from within the application. IPhone owners can still use a Web browser version of Google Voice, but its features are limited.

In a section of its letter that had originally been redacted, Google said Phil Schiller of Apple told Google's Alan Eustace, a senior vice president, during a July 7 phone call that Apple was rejecting the program.

Google also made public Friday some details related to Apple's rejection of the Google Latitude iPhone app, a map application that lets people share their location with friends.

Google said Apple rejected that program because it had the potential to replace Apple's own maps program or "create user confusion" over the two companies' programs. Schiller and Eustace met in person in April, Google said, at which point Schiller laid out the reasons for the rejection.

One-time allies Apple and Google now find themselves competing on a growing number of fronts. Google has its own mobile phone software, Android, that powers phones that compete with the iPhone. It recently announced plans for a computer operating system that could challenge Apple's Macs. Google CEO Eric Schmidt resigned from Apple's board in early August, after regulators from the Federal Trade Commission questioned his dual role's effect on competition in the industry.

Shares of Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple gained $1.12 to $185.67 in afternoon trading. Google's stock added $2.79 to $494.51.

Nokia X3: A Music Phone

For Those Who Take Music Seriously

The new Nokia X3 is a mobile phone that was made for people who take listening to music very seriously. This is not a mere mobile phone that has a music player (like other mobile phones in the market today). No, this is a music player that just happened to be a mobile phone. It just takes music that seriously.

Thankfully for people looking for this type of functionality, this mobile phone will not come with a significant price tag. This is a music phone that is made for the mass market, and with its mix of design and functionality, this is certainly one mobile phone that will give you your money’s worth.

The Music Player

This music player comes with a 96.0 x 49.3 x 14.1 mm body and weighs about 103 grams. It also comes in two color schemes; black and red for those looking for a sexy gadget, and silver and blue for those looking for a cooler, understated style.

But above everything else, this is a music phone and thus, the focus of its design and features are geared towards satisfying the needs and wants of music heads. First of all, it comes equipped with dedicated music keys next to its 2.2” screen. This allows for people to easily manage their music.

Also, this mobile phone has a up to 16GB of memory (via the microSD slot) that one can utilize to store their music. It also comes with stereo speakers, a great music playback application, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and even the option to customize the themes of the music player to fit one’s mood. To complete the musical experience, one can also use the Flight-mode to be able to enjoy one’s music without any interruptions as well as download and buy new music from the Ovi Store.

As one can see, this is certainly a mobile phone that is geared to be a music player. But its functionality does not end there.

Other Functions

This mobile phone comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera that allows one to capture videos and photos. It also allows for photo editing, sharing and even allows for people to upload pictures to Ovi Share or Flickr. Although it might not be the best camera out in the market, it certainly does have enough features and functions to make up for its simple 3.2 camera.

Apart from the photo capabilities, it also has a great and fluid web browser, email support, an FM Radio, Bluetooth, an array of different and fun games (changeable), as well as a very powerful instant messaging capability (support for Nokia Chat, Yahoo Go! and Windows Live! Messenger, as well as other instant messaging interfaces).

It also comes with the classic Nokia interface, as well as an active homescreen that feature animated wall players. It is clear to see that the Nokia X3 is a music phone to be reckoned with. It may not have the biggest or clearest screen out there nor will it have the widest array of applications but for the price it is being offered, this is a steal.

Nokia X6: Total Entertainment is Now Possible

Nokia X6 contract deals from Best Mobile Contracts. Compare Nokia X6 offers amp deals and find the right Nokia X6 contract today. We compare deals for the Nokia X6 on Orange, Vodafone, O2, Tmobile, 3 and Virgin, so why not compare Nokia X6 contracts today and save.
The Offer

The new offer from Nokia is a mobile phone that might just be the most complete entertainment mobile phone out there. This classy and trendy new offer has the functionality of a complete home system in a thin and attractive body. What is this wonder of entertainment that the people from Nokia have released? It is none other than the brilliantly designed Nokia X6.

This new offer from the mobile phone giants not only trumps all other “so-called” entertainment phones out there; it also challenges the reign of the ever-popular Iphone. With its widescreen, capacitive touchscreen, and an endless array of applications to fit all your entertainment needs, this mobile phone might just be the best phone. With this new offer, Nokia has allowed every person to bring their videos, photos, and any other media files anywhere they want to be. They have made entertainment perfectly mobile.

The Design

First of all, this 111.0 mm x 51.0 mm x 13.8 mm touchscreen phone is designed to be as trendy and as hip as possible. It comes with two color schemes (black and red and Blue and metallic white) that allow a person to pick whether he/she wants to strut a sexy and edgy design or a calm, cool and collected one. To add to this beautiful design, this phone also comes with a 3.2-inch touchscreen with 640 x 360 pixel display, which acts as a great medium to view videos, photos and even enhances mobile browsing. It also provides a place for people to put over 20 shortcuts that allow instant access to applications they usually use.

But truly, the most impressive aspect of this mobile phone’s design is its thinness. Yes, this mobile phone is a mere 13.8mm thin. Sure it sacrificed microSD card support but its huge internal memory and aesthetic design more than makes up for this minor exclusion. Truly, with a touchscreen phone this thin but this functional, mobile entertainment has truly been brought to another level.

The Functions

As far as function is concerned, this mobile phone will not leave you wanting. First, it comes with a great multimedia playback feature. This provides users a great application to play their music and videos. With its widescreen feature and 3.5mm headphone jack (as well as Bluetooth connectivity for wireless listening), watching and listening to media files with this device is simply a dream. Since it is a “Comes with Music” phone, people will have access to the millions of songs available online.

This phone also comes with a Carl Zeiss 5.0-megapixel camera with dual LED Flash, photo / video editing and video capture. It even allows for one to upload these videos and photos to their favorite social networking sites or play them on TV.

It also comes with an easy access to the different social networking sites, a fluid and complete Internet browser (with Adobe Flash), Nokia Maps, premium games, extensive email support, and other Ovi services (not to mention all the other downloadable content and other applications usually seen in Nokia phones).

Truly, the Nokia X6 is the most complete mobile phone one will find in the market today. It is simply the mobile phone that epitomizes the term “total entertainment”.

Lifecast with the Nokia N97 Mini

What is Lifecast?

Lifecast is the main feature of the new Nokia N97 Mini that was released recently. The term is similar to Podcast, which is a log of your opinions on media format. Instead of getting into the trite details of the etymology of the term, let us focus instead on what makes Lifecasting the blog of the future: it is easy to do.

The reason why web logs –or blogs, became famous is due to the nature of convenience attributed to it. All you had to do was type in your thoughts for the day, your opinions or what ever you wanted to write and presto, it was instantly uploaded on the internet for an audience of your choosing (thanks to privacy options on most blogging sites). This removes the hassle of making your own website that needed a full update and the recoding of HTML script even if all you wanted to do was say a couple of sentence for your update.

Lifecasting makes all of this even easier. No longer do you have to sit down in front of the computer, wait for your OS to load and finally go online and log on; all you have to do is pick up the Mini and enter Lifecast and you can instantly update your Facebook profile almost anytime and anywhere. This means you get to update the moment the thought hits your head. Of course, a lot of people have different social networking sites to which they are a part of, but no other social networking site is a successful as Facebook. This is why this new feature is such a convenience because a lot of people actually do use Facebook as opposed to other networking site such as MySpace, Multiply, Friendster and other sites.

Mobile Phone Specs

The Nokia N97 Mini may seem like a novelty phone with its Lifecasting feature. In actuality, the Mini is a pretty good phone. At closer inspection, you get to appreciate the fact that this phone is a mini. It's light and thin, yet it sports a full 3.2” touch screen display and a full slide out QWERTY keyboard. Naturally, the QWERTY keyboard is an extremely useful feature particularly when you are typing a message or getting into Lifecasting. The GPS function is supported by the Ovi Store, which means that you get to access updated and detailed maps. Simply get a mount for your car and you have an instant GPS device. Though you might also want to get a car charger as well to keep you battery juiced.

Battery Life

Speaking of batteries, the N97 Mini has as excellent battery. It can give you enough energy for 28 hours of music playback (though really, do we listen that much?), and up to twelve days of standby time. Of course, this is not considering the fact that a few days of standby time is not so bad since nobody really is without a charger access longer than a week. On the off chance that you are going camping, this battery life should be more than enough; though at this point you would probably have a second battery waiting in your bag.

Looking Good on Screenshots

Getting your hands on a rogue evaluation copy of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 is pretty much an impossibility to do right now. Still, the current press releases and information regarding this new XPERIA X2 still makes people wonder what Sony has up its sleeve regarding this device. Taking the attention away from the XPERIA X2 was a recent new regarding a new Sony mobile phone that employed a cross media browser and could synch and connect with other Sony electronics such as the Playstation 3 and the Sony Vaio. Many are still hoping that Sony implements this on the XPERIA series might just have to settle with a little disappointment regarding that matter.

The Panel System and the Windows Mobile 6.5 Operating System

There are two main interface systems on the XPERIA X2, first is the panel system. This is a series of 14 panels that serve as 3D icons for you to access the menu. This can later be expanded with 16 more additional panels that you can download from the internet. How this system really works is still a mystery, but at least we can tell you it looks good and stylish. Again, it is not as awesome as the cross media bar, but that is perfectly fine. Window Mobile 6.5 is also in this mobile phone. Not exactly a bad thing, but not something people with cheer for. At least it is upgradeable to Windows Mobile 7 and people seem pretty excited by that.

Using the interface will be done mostly through the touch screen display, and at 3.5 inches, that’s a pretty big and generous space for a screen. With Sony’s excellent reputation with media playback, this means you get an excellent device to watch videos on. There is still no word on how much the storage capacity will be for the XPERIA X2, but we can only assume that it should at least have 4GB of internal storage and provisions for expandable memory. It will definitely be an excellent music player and Sony has generously put in a 3.5mm headphone jack for this as well.

Sony’s Special Touch

It is still not known whether this mobile phone has any special features when it hooks up via Bluetooth with other Sony electronics, and here is to hoping that it will. The ability to access Remote Play and other features will not only expand your mobile phone’s functionality, but it will also make things a lot easier for users. No need to keep synching the mobile phone with the computer nor do you constantly need to copy media files from one electronic to another.

If there is one major thing to look forward to with the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2, it is whether this will truly be the last time the Windows Mobile operating system will be seen pre-installed on a Sony phone. By all means, Sony should scrap the Windows Mobile operating system and start making use of their cross media browser more. Not only does it look better, but it works better and faster than most mobile device interfaces as well.

The Samsung S3650 Genio is the new offer from Samsung (after the Samsung Star) that should be appealing to a lot of people out there. Its very stylish and fun design will surely attract those who shall not be disappointed by the even more fun and trendy functions this phone has. But the thing that most people will really appreciate is the fact that this mobile phone will not require one to spend too much hard earned money.

The Design

This mobile phone has a design that will put to shame a lot of other mobile phones in the market today. It comes in a 103 x 57 x 13 mm body that only weighs a mere 92 grams. It also comes in different variants (in terms of colors); black face and a variety of colored back covers, although it can be viewed as two variants, black and white and black and colored covers.

The black and white design (black in the front and white on the back) is ideal for people who like the understated stylish look, while the black and other colored variant is perfect for those looking for a little more excitement and edginess to their mobile phones.

It also comes with a 2.8 touchscreen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels (QVGA resolution) that can easily display respectably clear pictures and videos. The screen also provides a display that does not feel too cramped, unlike other, smaller screens.

In general, the design of this mobile phone is something that will be appreciated by the younger people in the market. Sure it does not have the same sophistication as the Blackberry or other phones out in the market today but sometimes, being sophisticated is just too boring for the youth.

The Functions

In terms of the functions, this phone does not fail in its effort to provide a quality experience to people looking for a bargain. First of all, its TouchWiz UI is very responsive and quite simple to use. It also comes with a 2.0 megapixel camera that has smile detection capabilities, 2-times digital zoom, and the capability to capture photos and videos of up to 1600 x 1200 pixels and 176 x 144 pixels respectively.

It also comes with a very good multimedia feature that has integrated music player, video playback capabilities, and a built-in FM radio. It has quad-band connectivity (GPRS / GSM / EDGE), and Bluetooth (A2DP support). Aside from these, it also has access to social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace, which will be greatly appreciated by the youth.

With everything considered, the Samsung S3650 Genio is certainly a mobile phone that will appeal to a lot of people. Yes, it is a budget mobile phone but its style and its functionality does not suffer in spite of the price tag.

If you were looking for a mobile phone that is hip, trendy and very functional but do not have too much money to shell out, then this mobile phone is for you. It is very stylish, very functional, and best of all, very cheap.

Mr Caunt added that despite being a very intelligent man, the Apple user was unaware of how to connect the gadget to the internet, but this was not surprising as it appeals to many different types of consumer.

"They see it as a phone that works well and won't embarrass them if they pull it out at a cocktail party," he concluded. "I suspect I'll encounter many more people reaching into their pocket and being surprised at what their phone can do."

Operator strategies for mobile broadband in emerging markets

Author: Doncrack // Category:
.
Features, Mobile phone, telecommunication, wireless,Mobile phone, review, Telecommunication, Mobile Technology, Wireless, Gadgets
17 September 2009 – Operators today are taking a far more pragmatic approach to mobile broadband in emerging markets than in developed markets, focusing more on the service offered (web access) than the technology or device. According to this report, operators are selling mobile broadband services based on everything from GPRS to WiMAX.

That said, HSPA will undoubtedly be the dominant technology in emerging markets for the next five years, accounting for two-thirds of next-generation access connections in 2014. “The opportunity for mobile WiMAX in emerging markets is certainly greater than in developed markets, but the more rapid adoption of LTE will see the two next-generation technologies almost on parity by 2014”, says Steven Hartley, senior analyst at Ovum and co-author of the report.

Another crucial practicality to consider is the cost involved in launching and running mobile broadband services, as with all emerging market services. “It is vital that operators build and then run highly efficient networks to handle the resulting data traffic,” Hartley explains. “ARPU will be low and margins negligible without a clear understanding of the building and operational costs associated with these services. Nonetheless, costs will not be solely in the network. The additional support needed for more complex services and devices should also be carefully considered”.

Pragmatism is also evident in the approach to deployment; however, the competitive landscape will dictate the strategy that operators should adopt. “Operators should take a more conservative view of technology and service rollouts to ensure demand and profitability before committing too much finance, where competition (or the threat of it) from fixed and mobile operators is limited.”

This may seem counterintuitive to operators with a mature market background, but those operating in markets with low ARPU and potentially high costs (such as fuel supplies to remote base stations or international connectivity) must be sure that a new service launch is viable. Therefore, operators are best ‘skimming’ the most profitable segments of the market if they can. “If competition already exists in the market then they may be forced into a broader, mass-market approach from launch”.

As a result of the heightened cost-consciousness and careful deployment of mobile broadband in emerging markets, customer segmentation is critical for success. The services, marketing and pricing for small-screen (handset) and big-screen (PC) devices will differ depending on the customers targeted. And the segments targeted will depend on the strategy adopted.

Unfortunately, the success or failure of mobile broadband in an emerging market may still be outside an operator’s control. “Governments have a major role to play in providing an environment conducive to success; spectrum policy is the clearest example of this, either through its release to operators or through global harmonisation to benefit from economies of scale”, says Daniel Subramaniam, analyst at Ovum and co-author of this report.

Governments also hold the keys to unlock several other stimuli for deployment and uptake. “Reducing taxes on telecoms services, encouraging competition and boosting investment in power supply and international connectivity could all result in lower prices to end users”, adds Subramaniam. Universal service obligations to bridge the digital divide can also be implemented to boost uptake. These may be less attractive to operators, but could be the stick compared to the carrot of the former measures. ♠ JC

There are several categories of mobile phones, from basic phones to feature phones such as musicphones and cameraphones, to smartphones. The first smartphone was the Nokia 9000 Communicator in 1996 which incorporated PDA functionality to the basic mobile phone at the time. As miniaturisation and increased processing power of microchips has enabled ever more features to be added to phones, the concept of the smartphone has evolved, and what was a high-end smartphone five years ago, is a standard phone today. Several phone series have been introduced to address a given market segment, such as the RIM BlackBerry focusing on enterprise/corporate customer email needs; the SonyEricsson Walkman series of musicphones and Cybershot series of cameraphones; the Nokia N-Series of multimedia phones; and the Apple iPhone which provides full-featured web access and multimedia capabilities.

BlackBerry is a line of wireless handheld devices that was introduced in 1999 as a two-way pager. In 2002, the more commonly known smartphone BlackBerry was released, which supports push e-mail, mobile telephone, text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing and other wireless information services as well as a multi-touch interface. It is an example of a convergent device. Developed by the Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM), it delivers information over the wireless data networks of mobile phone service companies. BlackBerry first made headway in the marketplace by concentrating on e-mail. RIM currently offers BlackBerry e-mail service to non-BlackBerry devices, such as the Palm Treo, through the BlackBerry Connect software. The original BlackBerry device had a monochrome display, but all current models have color displays.

While including PDA applications (address book, calendar, to-do lists, etc.) as well as telephone capabilities on newer models, the BlackBerry is primarily known for its ability to send and receive e-mail wherever it can access a wireless network of certain cellular phone carriers. Most current BlackBerry models have a built-in QWERTY keyboard, optimized for "thumbing", the use of only the thumbs to type, and there are also several models that include a standard cell phone keypad for typing, and one model that is a full touch-screen device with no physical keyboard. System navigation is primarily accomplished by a scroll ball, or "trackball" in the middle of the device (older devices used a track wheel on the side). Some models (currently, those manufactured for use with iDEN networks such as Nextel and Mike) also incorporate a Push-to-Talk (PTT) feature, similar to a two-way radio.

Modern GSM-based BlackBerry handhelds incorporate an ARM 7 or 9 processor, while older BlackBerry 950 and 957 handhelds used Intel 80386 processors. The latest GSM BlackBerry models (8100, 8300 and 8700 series) have an Intel PXA901 312 MHz processor, 64 MB flash memory and 16 MB SDRAM.[2] CDMA BlackBerry smartphones are based on Qualcomm MSM6x00 chipsets which also include the ARM 9-based processor and GSM 900/1800 roaming (as the case with the 8830 and 9500) and include up to 256MB flash memory.[3][4] The devices are very popular with some businesses, where they are primarily used to provide e-mail access to roaming employees. To fully integrate the BlackBerry into a company's systems, the installation of BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) is required, along with either Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes or Novell Groupwise email server applications.

On 30 May 2009, RIM announced the number of BlackBerry subscribers has reached approximately 28.5 million. [5]

Stubblefield of Murray, Kentucky. He applied this patent to "cave radio" telephones and not directly to cellular telephony as the term is currently understood.[4] Cells for mobile phone base stations were invented in 1947 by Bell Labs engineers at AT&T and further developed by Bell Labs during the 1960s. Radiophones have a long and varied history going back to Reginald Fessenden's invention and shore-to-ship demonstration of radio telephony, through the Second World War with military use of radio telephony links and civil services in the 1950s, while hand-held cellular radio devices have been available since 1973. A patent for the first wireless phone as we know today was issued in US Patent Number 3,449,750 to George Sweigert of Euclid, Ohio on June 10, 1969.

In 1945, the zero generation (0G) of mobile telephones was introduced. Like other technologies of the time, it involved a single, powerful base station covering a wide area, and each telephone would effectively monopolize a channel over that whole area while in use. The concepts of frequency reuse and handoff, as well as a number of other concepts that formed the basis of modern cell phone technology, were described in the 1970s; see for example Fluhr and Nussbaum,[5] Hachenburg et al.[6] , and U.S. Patent 4,152,647, issued May 1, 1979 to Charles A. Gladden and Martin H. Parelman, both of Las Vegas, Nevada and assigned by them to the United States Government.

Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive is widely considered to be the inventor of the first practical mobile phone for hand-held use in a non-vehicle setting. Cooper is the first inventor named on "Radio telephone system" filed on October 17, 1973 with the US Patent Office and later issued as US Patent 3,906,166;[7] other named contributors on the patent included Cooper's boss, John F. Mitchell, Motorola's chief of portable communication products, who successfully pushed Motorola to develop wireless communication products that would be small enough to use outside the home, office or automobile and participated in the design of the cellular phone.[8][9] Using a modern, if somewhat heavy portable handset, Cooper made the first call on a hand-held mobile phone on April 3, 1973 to a rival, Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs.[10]

The first commercial citywide cellular network was launched in Japan by NTT in 1979. Fully automatic cellular networks were first introduced in the early to mid 1980s (the 1G generation). The Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) system went online in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden in 1981.[11]

Mobile Phones Reviews and resources mobile phone, Handphone, handset, review, specification, price, camera phone, nokia, sony ericsson ,motorola ,samsung,LG,benQ,benqsiemens,BlackBerry ,Palm,O2,HTC,and moreIn 1983, Motorola DynaTAC was the first approved mobile phone by FCC in the United States. In 1984, Bell Labs developed modern commercial cellular technology (based, to a large extent, on the Gladden, Parelman Patent), which employed multiple, centrally controlled base stations (cell sites), each providing service to a small area (a cell). The cell sites would be set up such that cells partially overlapped. In a cellular system, a signal between a base station (cell site) and a terminal (phone) only need be strong enough to reach between the two, so the same channel can be used simultaneously for separate conversations in different cells.

Cellular systems required several leaps of technology, including handover, which allowed a conversation to continue as a mobile phone traveled from cell to cell. This system included variable transmission power in both the base stations and the telephones (controlled by the base stations), which allowed range and cell size to vary. As the system expanded and neared capacity, the ability to reduce transmission power allowed new cells to be added, resulting in more, smaller cells and thus more capacity. The evidence of this growth can still be seen in the many older, tall cell site towers with no antennae on the upper parts of their towers. These sites originally created large cells, and so had their antennae mounted atop high towers; the towers were designed so that as the system expanded—and cell sizes shrank—the antennae could be lowered on their original masts to reduce range.

The first data services appeared on mobile phones starting with person-to-person SMS text messaging in Finland in 1993. First trial payments using a mobile phone to pay for a Coca Cola vending machine were set in Finland in 1998. The first commercial payments were mobile parking trialled in Sweden but first commercially launched in Norway in 1999. The first commercial payment system to mimic banks and credit cards was launched in the Philippines in 1999 simultaneously by mobile operators Globe and Smart. The first content sold to mobile phones was the ringing tone, first launched in 1998 in Finland. The first full internet service on mobile phones was i-Mode introduced by NTT DoCoMo in Japan in 1999.

In 2001 the first commercial launch of 3G (Third Generation) was again in Japan by NTT DoCoMo on the WCDMA standard.[12]

Until the early 1990s, following introduction of the Motorola MicroTAC, most mobile phones were too large to be carried in a jacket pocket, so they were typically installed in vehicles as car phones. With the miniaturization of digital components and the development of more sophisticated batteries, mobile phones have become smaller and lighter.
